We got some super cute board books for my great-nephew's first Christmas, but I wanted to make something for him as well. My first thought was to make Peanut the elephant from Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts. The problem is that I was short on time. I hadn't made anything from that book yet, so I wasn't sure how easy the instructions would be and Nova posted a very cute but very time-consuming Peanut. Instead of my usual approach of throwing caution to the wind, I decided I didn't want to spend the entire week before Christmas making Peanut and being stressed out about it.
Fortunately, I was browsing through the Bend-the-Rules Sewing group on flickr when I noticed a very cute turtle posted to the group. "Turtle?", I thought. "I don't remember any turtle in that book..." And of course there is a pattern for a very cute turtle in Bend-the-Rules Sewing.
My first turtle attempt was "okay" but definitely not stellar. Fortunately, it is a really quick project and so it was easy just to go ahead and make a second turtle. I give you... little turtles.
I decided the original turtle was a bit too small and went ahead and increased the size for the second turtle. Along the way, I also figured out that I put the head together totally incorrectly for the first turtle, which is why their heads do not look at all similar. And let me tell you, I didn't just go a little bit wrong, I went crazy bad wrong and added a ton of extra work in that first turtle. The second turtle was a snap in comparison. I love these turtles - so cute and fun to make.
I haven't given up on Peanut though, the elephant is definitely still in my future along with more turtles :)

Wow these are adorable!! the bigger turtle definitely has a neater head but i just love the baby turtle!
